October 31, 2014 -- The race to succeed term limited Democratic Assemblymember Joan Buchanan in district 16 drew a fierce primary battle among Democrats. Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti advanced to the general election after labor unions rallied around him. Fellow Democratic candidate Steve Glazer, who previously alienated unions by working with the Chamber of Commerce, further antagonized organized labor by proposing a ban on transit worker strikes. The labor-funded independent expenditure committee, Californians for Economic Prosperity, responded by attacking Glazer, and he lost the primary. Meanwhile, Sbranti’s campaign has raised $669,200, and his top 5 donors are all labor unions.
Sbranti’s opponent is Republican attorney Catharine Baker, the top vote getter and only Republican to run in the June primary. Baker has raised $385,900 from top contributors like Wells Fargo ($9,077), her law firm, Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel ($9,050), and Palo Alto physicist Charles Munger ($8,200).
