BERKELEY, CA--December 13, 2010--MAPLight.org is aligning committee appointments for the 112th Congress with campaign contributions from the most recent campaign finance information available from the Center for Responsive Politics (OpenSecrets.org). David Camp Named Chairman for House Ways and Means Committee

According to the New York Times, the Republican leadership has chosen Rep. David Camp as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee for the 112th Congress. Camp currently serves as the ranking minority member on Ways and Means.

Camp represents Michigan's 4th Congressional District, which includes portions of the northwest section of the state's Lower Peninsula.

Ways and Means is the oldest committee of the U.S. Congress, according to the Committee's congressional website. Ways and Means has "jurisdiction over revenue and related issues such as tariffs, reciprocal trade agreements, and the bonded debt of the United States," as well as Social Security and Medicare.

Fred Upton Named Chairman for Energy and Commerce Committee

Bloomberg reports, Rep. Fred Upton has triumphed in a muti-lateral contest to chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Texas's Joe Barton, Illinois's John Shimkus and Florida's Cliff Stearns were also vying for the job.

Rep. Upton represents Michigan's 6th Congressional District, which includes the seven counties of southwest Michigan. The Congressman has served in the House of Representatives since 1986.

The Energy and Commerce Committee has a broad portfolio, including jurisdiction over national energy policy as well as interstate and foreign commerce.

Ron Paul Chosen to Head the House Financial Services Domestic Monetary Policy Subcommittee

According to an article written by Peter Schroeder for The Hill, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) has been selected to chair the House Financial Services Domestic Monetary Policy Subcommittee.

Dr. Paul, a graduate of Duke University Medical School, represents Texas' 14th Congressional District, located on the Gulf Coast.

Rep. Paul has been an outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve Bank's inflation policies, and has introduced legislation aimedat auditing the Fed.

Frank Lucas Chosen to Chair House Agriculture Committee

Oklahoma Rep. Frank Lucas has been selected to chair the House Committee on Agriculture, according to the New York Times. Lucas is currently serving as the ranking minority member on the Ag. Committee. According to the Congressman's website, he and his family have been farming in Oklahoma for more than 100 years. Rep. Lucas also holds a degree in Agricultural Economics from Oklahoma State University.

Lucas is frequent recipient of campaign contributions from the agriculture industry. Lucas is the fifth largest recipient in the House of Representatives of contributions from individuals and organizations related to the Crop production & basic processing category code.

The New York Times reports that the congressman representing Alabama's 6th District, Spencer Bachus, has been named the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee for the 112th Congress. Bachus formerly served as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit.

According to Rep. Bachus's congressional website, the legislator "has been named Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business, Friend of the Taxpayer by Americans for Tax Reform, Friend of the Family by the Christian Coalition and has received the Spirit of Free Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce."

Doc Hastings to Chair House Natural Resources Committee 

The current ranking minority member of the House Natural Resources Committee is set to become its chair for the 112th Congress, according to the New York Times. Rep. Doc Hastings, who represents Washington's 4th Congressional District, will chair the committee that oversees federal land and water use, national parks and forests and Indian reservations.

As he notes on his Congressional website, the Natural Resources Committee is of particular importance to the Congressman's home state of Washington's major projects, namely the Bonneville Power Administration and the Columbia Basin and Yakima Projects, which all fall under the Natural Resource Committee's jurisdiction.
