Following the introduction of the For the People Act (H.R 1 / S.1) in the Senate today, Decode Democracy President Daniel G. Newman issued the following statement: “The For the People Act is the type of bold legislation we need to bring our democracy back from the brink of collapse. Not only does the bill limit the influence of big money in politics, expand access to voting, and end partisan and racial gerrymandering — it also marks the most significant work from Congress yet to deal with the growing problem of online disinformation. “With the online world overrun with lies, conspiracy theories, and calls to violence, it’s clear we cannot rely on social media platforms to fix the problem on their own. We need stronger laws to promote more transparency so voters know who is trying to influence them online, and the For the People Act marks an important step in that direction. We cannot allow our democracy to deteriorate any longer.
