October 31, 2014 -- The race for Napa Valley in California's 4th Assembly district, being vacated by termed-out Democratic Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada, saw a spirited primary battle. The June 3rd faceoff showcased a trio of Democrats who drew a combined $1.28 million in independent expenditures from outside groups. Nevertheless, Charlie Schaupp, a largely self-financed farmer and the only Republican to actively campaign in the Democratic district, managed to place second with 26.1% of the vote to advance alongisde Napa County Supervisor Bill Dodd, who, as a Democrat, is favored to win the November election.
The general election campaign has been characterized by an immense funding disparity between the two candidates, with Schaupp's $18,400 primarily in personal loans pitted against Dodd's $896,500 from top contributors like Caymus Vineyards and Jackson Family Enterprises.
