Insurance Companies Didn’t Stop Gov’t Unions on ‘Health Benefits Exchange’ Vote

State & local government employee unions interest groups contributed an average of $29,721 to lawmakers voting 'yes' and only $3,394 to lawmakers voting 'no.' Accident & health insurance interest groups gave an average of $11,089 to lawmakers voting against the bill and only $7,156 to lawmakers voting in favor of passage.

In the California State Senate, oil companies have given just under twice as much on average to Republicans than they have to Democrats over the last four years (7/1/2006 to 6/30/2010). The picture is more pronounced in the Assembly, where these large oil companies gave nearly three times as much on average to Republicans as Democrats in the last election cycle (1/1/2009 to 6/30/2010).

It is backed by state & local government workers unions, who gave an average of $43,203 to senators voting 'yes,' 13 times more than the $3,250 they gave to those who voted 'no,' based on a August 20, 2010 Senate floor vote. The same treatment was given to the assembly. State & local government workers unions gave $53,942 to assemblymembers voting 'yes' compared to the $2,231 given to assemblymembers voting 'no,' based on a August 26, 2010 Assembly floor vote.

The prison guard union has given $522,313 to Democrats and $281,350 to Republicans. The lone registered independent, Juan Arambula, received $4,000.

Based on an August 26, 2010 passage vote in the Assembly, supporting interest gave 14 times more to assembly members voting 'yes' than to those voting 'no.' The bill has passed both houses and awaits action by the governor.

The measure failed (16-19) in the senate on August 31, 2010 when five Democrats joined all Republicans in voting against it, another four Democrats did not vote. These nine Democrats received 65% more from all recorded opposing groups compared to totals from supporting groups.
