May 18, 2011 - The California Senate Committee on Judiciary voted on May 10 to adopt SB 242, a bill that would prohibit social networking sites from displaying certain information without the expressed agreement of the user. The bill was ordered to a third reading on May 17, the last step before a measure is considered on the floor.

May 17, 2011 - The Senate on Tuesday failed to meet the 60 vote threshold needed to move to consideration of S. 940 - Close Big Oil Tax Loopholes Act. The measure fell by a 52-48 margin.

May 16, 2011 - Nursing homes are seeking exemptions from the new health care law, claiming an inability to fund new insurance coverage mandates, according to the New York Times.

May 16, 2011 - A proposal to cut off pension benefits to any public employee convicted of a felony arising directly out of his or her professional duties failed to pass out of the California State Senate Committee on Public Employment and Retirement earlier this month. The committee vote was two in favor (both Republicans) and zero opposed, with all three Democrats declining to vote. Had a single Democrat supported the measure, it would have been approved by the committee at large.
